If you're a busy individual seeking a quick and foolproof way to prepare perfect white rice, then you're in for a treat. The Instant Pot has become a kitchen essential for many, and with good reason. Its ability to streamline cooking processes and consistently deliver fantastic results has won over the hearts of home cooks everywhere.

It seems rice is one of the hardest things to cook. It's easy to overcook it or undercook it. I also don't suggest cooking rice on Top Chief or Chopped unless you are making this rice recipe!

Finished White Rice

I created this fool-proof, easy recipe to help with busy dinners. I love throwing this in the instant pot because after about 10 mins of prep work, you add the lid and you can set it and forget it. Freeing you up to focus your attention elsewhere. I know as a busy mom that can be the game changer for a busy weeknight meal. After making it you will see why it is the best Instant Pot white rice.

This is our family's favorite white rice, it is so flavorful and it doesn't stick to the bottom of the Instant Pot! This side dish is on a weekly rotation in our house. I love pairing it with fish or chicken dishes.

The Best Instant Pot White Rice

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons of unsalted butter

  • 3 Tablespoons of olive oil

  • 1 medium onion

  • 3-4 garlic cloves

  • Salt and pepper

  • 2 Tablespoon of grated ginger (optional - this is a great addition for any Asian dishes)

  • 2 ¼ Cups of water or chicken stock (cold not warm)

  • 2 Cups of jasmine rice

Note: You could make this in any Instant Pot (IP) that has a Saute and Rice button. The one I have is the Instant Pot 8qt duo.

Directions

  1. Peel and chop your onion into a fine dice

  2. Peel and chop your fresh garlic and ginger (feel free to use the already chopped in the fridge - I find this saves time)

  3. Turn on your Instant Pot to Saute ( if your instant pot doesn't have this feature you can cook the following steps (4-5) on the stove then add into the instant pot.

  4. Add Butter and Olive Oil to the bottom of the Instant Pot.

  5. Add chopped onion to the instant pot.

  6. Stir occasionally with a long spoon so it doesn't burn. The onion will get nice and caramelized. If the IP starts to give you a HOT warning then turn off the machine and let it cool down. You can turn it back on again after 5 min cool down. It's important not to let the onions burn.

  7. While the onions are sauteing I like to rinse my rice with cold water. You can use a fine mesh strainer or rinse in a bowl changing the water 3-4 times.

  8. After the onions are cooked, turn off the IP and add the garlic and ginger. Wait 1-2 mins it should smell amazing! Stir one last time.

  9. Add salt and pepper.

  10. Add the rinsed rice (remember your IP should be off)

  11. Add water or broth. Very important - Do Not mix or stir.

  12. Take your spoon and make the rice an even level. Push any rice on the sides down into the water. We want every grain of rice in the water.

  13. Close the lid, turn Venting Knob to Sealing Position. Cook on rice setting for 12 minutes.

  14. Natural Release for a minimum of 5 minutes, max 10 minutes. Turn Venting Knob to Venting position to release the remaining pressure. Open the lid.

Take rice out of IP as soon as it is done cooking. It will dry out if left inside. I know that this will be the best Instant Pot White rice that you make and it will be on your regular family dinner rotation.

Congratulations! You've now mastered "The Best Instant Pot White Rice." With this recipe, you can now confidently whip up fluffy, perfectly cooked rice with ease. Gone are the days of soggy or undercooked grains – your Instant Pot will consistently deliver outstanding results every time.
